The Martin Memorial Sleep Disorders Center performs specialized sleep studies for those who suffer from disturbances such as sleep apnea, snoring, abnormal behaviors during sleep and excessive sleepiness.
The center consists of four "sleep bays," or private bedroom-like settings, designed to make you feel as comfortable as if in your own home. Each room is equipped with a full-sized bed, a private bathroom with a shower, and cable TV. Solid construction assures a quiet atmosphere, and fully adjustable lighting and climate controls provide optimal sleeping conditions.
The center conducts two basic types of studies: the all-night sleep record and the daytime nap series. The all-night sleep record consists of measurements of various body functions during sleep. These measurements are recorded on long rolls of paper on an instrument called a polygraph. The center records your brain wave patterns, muscle tension levels, and movements of your eyes. Measurements may be taken of your heartbeat, the amount of oxygen in your blood, the amount of air you breathe in and out, and movements of the chest, abdomen and legs.
