About Us

Martin Memorial's rehabilitation professionals have one goal in mind: to ensure the optimum recovery of our patients. We treat adults and children of all ages and help them recover from a variety of orthopedic, neurological and medical conditions. We offer the highest quality of care and the best programs to make sure you reach your optimal functioning level after injury or when living with a disability. We also provide information to help you prevent re-injury.

With six convenient locations, we offer some of the most easy-to-access care on the Treasure Coast. In addition, four of our rehabilitation facilities have Martin Memorial Wellness Centers right next door, which means you can transition easily from rehabilitation to your regular exercise program. Two of our facilities have pools, which are used for aquatic therapy programs and exercise. All of our facilities have top-of-the-line rehabilitation equipment, including our pediatric therapy center, which has been designed and equipped for that very special population.

How Our Program Works

Martin Memorial rehabilitation professionals will work with your doctor to thoroughly evaluate your needs and design an individualized plan of care to meet your personal goals. Your plan may consist of various treatment modalities, hands-on techniques, exercise programs to facilitate recovery, and education for maintenance and prevention of re-injury. When discharged, you can easily transition to one of our convenient wellness centers to maintain the gains you’ve made. We want to enable you to take charge of your life and be able to realize your goals and maintain them.

Our Team

The Martin Memorial team consists of highly-skilled, licensed professionals, including:

  • Occupational Therapists
Occupational therapists help people to regain the activities of daily living. These therapists mainly treat shoulder, arm and hand conditions and injuries, and help with post-surgical recovery. Occupational therapists can help you use adaptive equipment and will teach you therapeutic exercises.

  • Physical Therapists
Physical therapists examine and treat musculoskeletal and neuromuscular problems that affect a person’s ability to move and function in activities of daily living. This specialist provides treatment for a vast array of conditions which cause pain in the spine, limbs and trunk, and which affect balance and gait.

  • Speech Language Pathologists
Speech language pathologists provide diagnostic testing and treatment for patients with deficits in speech, language, voice, cognition and swallowing.

Our Services

Our centers provide all of the usual components expected of quality rehabilitation services, and treat patients for a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. We emphasize:

  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Gait training
  • Strength and endurance training
  • Activities of daily living training

  • Neuromuscular re-education

  • Evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders
  • Wound management (limited locations)
  • Fine and gross motor coordination retraining

Our programs include:

Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation
Vestibular and balance rehabilitation helps those affected by dizziness, vertigo, balance loss and falls. Our specialists evaluate and treat vestibular disorders related to inner ear problems and treat balance disorders by helping you perform specialized exercises to regain normal response to motion or position. This program may include balance testing; balance, strength and flexibility exercises; and gait and balance retraining. Our facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including the Equi test and the Balance Master from NeuroCom. The tests measure your balance and posture using tests that mimic daily activities and real-world conditions. We will help you regain your stability and confidence while reducing your dizziness and fear of falling.

New! Spine-Six Treatment for Low Back and Neck Pain
Martin Memorial now has a high-technology treatment for low back and neck pain called the Spine-Six™ BioMotion Spinal System. This therapy, in conjunction with our usual protocols for treating low back and neck pain, can help those who suffer from chronic and acute spinal pain by enhancing early spinal mobilization. The Spine-Six is a chair that allows increased muscle relaxation and computer-controlled mobilization of the spine in a relaxed, gravity-free position. Moving the joints of the spine through their normal ranges of motion in this relaxed environment accelerates the healing process. Spine-Six if offered at our Hobe Sound and Palm City locations. (If your insurance will not cover as many sessions of this therapy as you and your doctor prefer, ask about our self-pay options.)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Decongestive Therapy
Our manual lymphatic drainage program helps those who have lymphedema, an accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the tissues caused by impairment of the lymphatic system. This program uses specialized massage, compression bandaging, skin care, exercise and education to reduce or eliminate symptoms.

Dysphagia Management
For those with difficulty swallowing caused by neuromuscular deficits, our speech language pathologists work with a radiologist to perform a special test to assess chewing and swallowing function. This assessment allows the therapist to develop appropriate recommendations for intervention as well as education for the patient and his or her family.

Hand Rehabilitation
Our specially-certified hand therapists help you regain function following hand injury due to surgery, trauma, wounds, scars, burns, injured tendons or nerves, or fractures or amputations of the finger, hand or arm. Our therapists also help those with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow.

Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy utilizes the lower-stress environment of water to help those who cannot tolerate exercise on land. Usually, this therapy is done to help you transition to land-based exercise and activities. Aquatic therapy is often used for patients with conditions such as sprains, fractures, decreased range of motion, balance disorders, developmental delays and stroke.

New! Water Shiatsu (Watsu)
This modality of aquatic therapy is a specialized technique that uses the flow of the water, buoyancy and warm temperature to provide gentle mobilization of joints and soft tissue. With continuous support from the water and the practitioner, the client floats and is moved through a series of gentle but deep stretches. The buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure of the water help to support joints and increase overall circulation. This technique is profoundly relaxing and is an excellent stepping stone to improve flexibility, function on land and helps to interrupt the pain cycle. (If your insurance will not cover as many sessions of this therapy as you and your doctor prefer, ask about our self-pay options.)

Peripheral Neuropathy Therapy
Anodyne therapy is a treatment to help patients with peripheral neuropathy ease foot pain and restore balance. This therapy uses monochromatic infrared energy to promote regeneration and revascularization of damaged capillaries by releasing excess nitric oxide from cells. The combination of this treatment with balance training and therapeutic exercise relieves pain and restores feeling to damaged nerves in the feet, and helps to reduce the likelihood of falls.

Osteoporosis Rehabilitation
Our osteoporosis rehabilitation program can help those who have osteoporosis and are susceptible to bone fracture or vertebra collapse. Our education program will help you prevent injury, and weight-bearing and strengthening exercises for the spine and body will help you become stronger and reduce the chance for injuries.

Low Vision Rehabilitation
For those who have low vision due to age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, stroke, head injury, cerebral palsy, and Downs Syndrome, our low vision specialist is certified to teach compensatory techniques. These techniques, which include visual skills training and adaptation techniques, allow you to use your remaining vision to its fullest extent.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
For those with urinary incontinence, our therapists can help you with a program designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which hold the bladder in place. Therapy consists of neuromuscular re-education (biofeedback) and pelvic floor strengthening exercises. This program can provide much relief from embarrassing situations by reducing episodes up to 80 percent.

Pediatric Therapy
Martin Memorial has a specialized team of therapists to who treat infants, babies and children with developmental delays and various neurological, orthopedic and speech dysfunctions. Our team consists of an pediatric occupational, physical and speech therapists, and an audiologist. Families are encouraged to be involved in their child's therapy by participating in treatment sessions and working with the child at home. Pediatric therapy is offered at our Jensen Beach location only.

New! Back to Golf Program
The purpose of this comprehensive program is to help golfers get back on the course. The program focuses on increasing flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as identifying the causees of pain and how to correct them. Participants will receive a complete evaluation, goals, individualized instruction and home exercises. Great gift idea: purchase a "Back to Golf" gift certificate.
