About Radiation Oncology
The radiation oncology department at the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Memorial delivers radiation therapy treatments to cancer patients. Radiation therapy is a major part of cancer treatment. Therapy is available at the cancer center in Stuart, and at Martin Memorial's St. Lucie West radiation oncology treatment center.
Advances in diagnostic imaging equipment and computer technology allow Martin Memorial's radiation oncology facilities the ability to treat cancers more aggressively. The most recent therapies direct the most precise doses to a tumor with minimal effect to the surrounding healthy tissue. This is especially beneficial if the tumor is close to vital organs or other tissues that are highly sensitive to radiation. Patients experience improved recovery times and fewer complications compared to conventional radiation treatments.
Radiation Therapy Services
Our radiation oncology therapies include:
-
Trilogy Treatment
Trilogy Treatment image-guided radiosurgery allows Martin Memorial physicians to treat more complex cancer cases and other central nervous system disorders, delivering more dose in a shorter period of time than was previously possible, while protecting normal healthy tissue. In many cases, this can be done on an outpatient basis with minimal, if any side effects.

-
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy and
Cone-Beam CTIntensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) uses lasers to pinpoint radiation treatment of cancer, which limits damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Martin Memorial is the first in Florida to offer cone-beam CT in conjunction with IMRT to help physicians make precise adjustments to a patient's IMRT treatment on a daily basis.

- MammoSite Breast Cancer Treatment
MammoSite radiation therapy is an alternative to traditional radiation therapy for breast cancer, delivering targeted therapy in a shorter time period.

The Radiation Oncology Team
Our team of specially trained medical professionals will consult with your physician to manage your care. The cancer center radiation oncology team includes board-certified radiation oncologists, nurses, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, social workers, dietitians and others who serve as partners in your care.
Our board-certified radiation oncologists are physicians with advanced credentials who use radiation technology and radioactive materials in the evaluation and treatment of cancer. Our radiation oncologists include Drs. Gary Griffis, Kiran Reddy and Jorge Castillo.
The medical physicist calibrates the radiation-generating equipment to deliver the correct doses of treatment prescribed by the radiation oncologist. The medical physicist has training in radiation therapies, measurement and calculations.
The medical dosimetrist is a professional who designs radiation treatment plans specific to each cancer patient's prescriptions. This is accomplished with the use of three-dimensional imaging of the tumor shape and volume.
The radiation therapist is responsible for the simulation and administration of a prescribed course of radiation therapy. The radiation therapist positions the patient and delivers the treatment.
The radiation oncology nurse monitors side effects and complications and can offer psychological and nutritional support.
