Benefits of Being a Martin Memorial Nurse

  • Excellent Nurse-Patient Ratios
We develop our nurse-patient ratios so that our nurses can concentrate on meeting each patient's needs. Our nurses are able to give each patient the individual attention he or she deserves, the kind of care that we would give to our own families.
  • Strong Team Environment
Our Registered Nurse leaders, with the help of our Licensed Practical Nurses and Patient Care Technicians, coordinate teams that provide care for each patient. The team works together and with other disciplines to assess each patient and develop a plan of care. The RN collaborates with the physician, ensuring that all aspects of the patient plan of care are working well. As one of our nurses said, "I have been a nurse for a long time, and the nurses at Martin Memorial are more competent, compassionate and caring than any other place I’ve been. We truly are like a family."
  • Friendly, Family Environment
Martin Memorial is proud to offer its employees a comfortable, friendly, family-oriented environment. Founded in 1939, Martin Memorial's original hospital had 23 beds, three physicians, 10 employees. As we have grown over the years to more than 2,600 employees, we have kept that family-oriented environment throughout our health system. Our senior leaders provide a sense of stability by staying in their positions for many years, usually more than 20 years each. Many of our employees also stay here for extended employment, and we very much value and appreciate our long-time employees.
  • Generous Shift Differentials and Seasonal and Premium Pay Options
Martin Memorial offers excellent shift differentials year-round, but during our season, we offer even more generous night shift differentials as well as special overtime bonuses to reward our nurses for dedication and hard work. Instead of working for a travel company, we offer nurses the opportunity to work directly with Martin Memorial during our busy season (December to April). This option "cuts out the middle man" so you can realize the difference in your paycheck.
  • Competent Staff
We are proud that more than 25 percent of the nurses at Martin Memorial have received specialty certifications in areas such as oncology, perioperative, medical-surgical, critical care/emergency and obstetrical nursing. Many of our RNs also have advanced education, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
  • Continuing Education Opportunities
Continuing education is a priority at Martin Memorial, as evidenced by our tuition reimbursement and scholarship programs. We encourage our nurses to further their careers by learning about the latest clinical applications, both through in-service and outside educational resources. Martin Memorial’s Medical Library also provides resources for nurses to research patient conditions, learn about the latest procedures, or take part in continuing education programs. Read more about educational opportunities below.
  • Mentoring
We believe that after graduation, nurses benefit from hands-on experience with mentors. Martin Memorial has a mentoring program for graduate nurses in which the needs of each nurse are considered, and an individual orientation program is designed to meet his or her specific needs. Nurses at Martin Memorial also provide mentoring and clinical practice opportunities for student nurses from local colleges and universities. Many students decide to work at Martin Memorial while they are doing their clinical studies with our nurses.
  • Community Involvement Opportunities
We encourage our nurses to serve on advisory boards, lecture, lead discussion panels, and attend career fairs at local nursing schools.
  • Shared Governance
The Martin Memorial Department of Nursing supports a philosophy of shared governance in which all levels of employees participate in the governance of our nursing practice through councils and committees. Our nurses have a powerful voice in the development of policies, procedures and processes that are central to professional practice and patient care.
  • Excellence Awards
We appreciate our nurses, and we show it through our employee recognition programs and our annual Nursing Excellence Awards. As one of our nurses said, "What I like best are the handwritten thank-you notes. Those gestures make a big difference!" See photos and stories of the 2005 Nursing Excellence Award winners.
  • Drug and Discrimination-Free Workplace
Martin Memorial is proud to be a drug-free workplace. We provide equal opportunity in employment for all qualified persons, and prohibit discrimination in employment with regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, age, national origin or disability. Please see our Drug Free Workplace Policy.

Nursing Department Vision, Mission, Philosophy

Vision
The vision of the Nursing Department at Martin Memorial is to utilize evidence-based practice to continually improve patient outcomes; and to enhance nursing autonomy and staff involvement in Nursing decisions and shared governance. This is achieved by promoting superior interdepartmental relations and respect through a caring attitude toward patients, physicians and each other, thereby becoming the employer of choice and a Magnet-designated hospital.

Mission
Martin Memorial’s Department of Nursing mission is to facilitate patient self-care utilizing an interdisciplinary, holistic, research-based approach. This mission promotes value, high quality and professional nursing practice, resulting in concern for patient’s individuality and nurturing harmony among staff, physicians and our community.

Philosophy
We believe that nursing is a dynamic, interactive and scientific process based on a unique and ever-expanding body of knowledge. Nursing is both an art and a science, delivered by practitioners who, by virtue of education, research and experience, provide individualized quality care in a caring, therapeutic atmosphere. Inherent in our delivery model is the expertise to address each individual's physical, emotional, developmental, social, spiritual and cultural uniqueness. In collaboration with other members of the health care team, the nurse strives to maintain or restore individuals to their optimum level of wellness, or assure dignity in the dying process. We further believe that care extends beyond the individual to include members of the family/support system and community.

Nursing has the autonomy to set nursing goals with the individual and his/her family and to coordinate his/her comprehensive plan of care. The nurse functions as an advocate and educator in preventive care and health maintenance for individuals, their family/support systems and the community.

Our shared philosophy encompasses both clinical and ethical standards for which each nurse is accountable.

Educational Opportunities

Clinical Advancement Program
Martin Memorial's Clinical Advancement Program recognizes Registered Nurses who excel in the profession by providing advancement opportunities and monetary awards. We promote this program to help our RNs advance their skills and competencies, to be more satisfied on the job, and to keep our excellent nurses here at Martin Memorial.
