When a loved one is receiving cancer care or other outpatient treatment at the hospital, it can be comforting to have a home-like place to stay overnight, a place that is close to the hospital. Molly's House is that home away from home. Since 1996, Molly's House has been providing a comfortable place for family members and patients to stay.
Molly's Story
In 1986, Molly Sharkey was diagnosed with Myelocytic Leukemia, a very rare form of cancer. Molly and her family traveled the country seeking treatment, but most doctors and hospitals held little hope and would not accept her as a patient. During this trying time, Molly and her family found comfort when they could stay at Ronald McDonald Houses close to the hospitals. However, most often there was no convenient place for the family to stay. It was this experience that lead to Molly's Dream.
Molly's Dream
Most teenagers dream of senior prom, graduation, and college. But Molly's dream was to build a home in Stuart where families could stay while their loved ones were in the hospital and needed their family nearby. On September 21, 1996, the day that would have been Molly's 23rd birthday, that dream was realized when Molly's House opened in Stuart. The three-story Victorian style house is as Molly envisioned it, with a wrap-around porch, spiral staircase, lots of windows, and plenty of flower beds. Other features include:
- 12 bedrooms with private bathrooms
- Two family suites
- Two kitchens
- Two solariums
- Large living room
- Chapel
- Library
- Playroom
- Laundry room
- Elevator
- 11,000 square feet
Molly's House is located within easy walking distance of Martin Memorial Medical Center, Martin Memorial Cancer Center and downtown Stuart. Any family who has a loved one receiving care at Martin Memorial is welcome to stay at the house. Also, patients who are eligible, or who are referred by social services, may also stay at Molly's House.
Donations Welcome
Molly's House was built and furnished entirely with generous donations from the community. Its continuing operation depends on the gifts of the community and donations from guests who stay at the house. Molly's House is owned and governed by an independent not-for-profit board of volunteer directors.
