About Us

Martin Memorial's medical library, the B. Lester Archer Library, is a place where you can learn about medical conditions, search for information on the latest treatments, or just use the computer in a quiet setting. You can even plug in your own laptop.

Located on the first floor of the Martin Memorial Medical Center (across from Conference Room B), the medical library serves patients and their families, physicians, nurses, health workers, students and the community. A full-time librarian is on hand to help you find what you need. The library has:

  • More than 300 medical textbooks
  • Numerous journals, including:
    • American Family Physician
    • Annals of Internal Medicine
    • Archives of Internal Medicine
    • Archives of Surgery
    • Journal of the American Medical Association
    • Lancet
    • New England Journal of Medicine
    • Nursing
    • Nursing Spectrum
    • RN
  • Several hundred videos
  • Patient education materials
  • Three computers with Internet access and Microsoft Office
  • Printer, fax, and copy machine
  • Access to MD Consult database
  • A collection of historical textbooks
  • One full-time librarian
  • Three volunteers

Can't find what you need? The medical library works with the University of Miami School of Medicine's Calder Medical Library to perform medical searches, obtain articles, borrow textbooks and access textbooks online. Most requests for searches or articles have a two-day turnaround time.

A medical database called MD Consult can also be accessed through the medical library. The database contains journals, medical textbooks and patient education materials.

Continuing Education

Martin Memorial's Education Department offers continuing education credits to nurses through the medical library. Please contact Linda Ampol at (772) 223-5945, ext. 3693 to learn more.

History

The library was endowed in 1985 and dedicated to the memory of B. Lester Archer, a long-time Martin Memorial physician. The library began with a tiny room and a few textbooks, staffed by one volunteer. Since then, it has grown considerably, and it is now funded by Martin Memorial.

Donations Welcome

We greatly appreciate any donations of current specialty medical journals.
