How Our Program Works
Pre-Admission
We highly recommend that you pre-register for admission to the hospital before your 28th week of pregnancy. By pre-registering, your admission to the hospital on the birth day will be much smoother. Call (772) 223-5905 to pre-register for hospital admission.
Tours
When you call to pre-register, make an appointment to tour our facility. We provide tours to all interested parents-to-be on an appointment basis. You will be met by the department secretary, and then escorted on a tour of the unit by one of our nurses. The tour includes:
-
Hospital access
-
OB admitting area
- Labor-delivery-recovery rooms
- Neonatal intensive care nursery
- Mother-baby unit
During the tour and orientation to our facility, we will familiarize you with the admitting procedures, safety and security procedures and childbirth education classes, and we will initiate plans for your discharge to home, including a home visit from our home health staff.
Childbirth Classes
Our childbirth classes can help you and your partner prepare for the birth, help prepare siblings for the new arrival, give you information about breastfeeding, teach family members how to care for the newborn, teach emergency care skills, or just refresh moms and partners who are already experienced. We recommend that you wait until your fifth month of pregnancy before registering for classes.
Read about the classes we offer and how to register.
The Birth Day!When the birth day comes, we will be here to give you the very best care. Your partner can be with you during the birth, and may stay overnight in your private room. Siblings are not allowed to stay overnight. Please refer to our
visitation policy for other visitor guidelines. You may request a copy from one of our staff members, or see it on Martin Memorial's Web site at mmhs.com.
Our Services
Breastfeeding Consultant and Lactation Station
For many families, breastfeeding is the natural thing to do. Human milk has special properties that cannot be duplicated by infant formula. Babies who are breastfed have significant nutritional, psychological and immunological advantages.
Martin Memorial offers support for breastfeeding moms with our lactation consultant and lactation hot-line, (772) 223-5945, ext. 1665.
Our board-certified lactation consultant is part of your health care team. She will give you information before your baby is born to help you decide which feeding method is best for you, and how to begin breastfeeding in the early postpartum days. Your lactation consultant will assess mother and baby's progress with breastfeeding, and make recommendations that will prolong the length and enjoyment of breastfeeding. You may also choose to take one of Martin Memorial's breastfeeding classes.
After your baby is born, feel free to contact your lactation consultant with daily questions such as growth spurts, feeding frequencies and mom's return to work. You can meet with your consultant or just call her.
Your lactation consultant can help with:
- Preventing and managing sore nipples
- Managing lactation difficulties
- Preventing and managing engorgement milk supply
- Slow weight gain or weight loss
- Breastfeeding twins
- Breastfeeding the premature infant
- Breastfeeding after Cesarean section
- Sucking problems
- Preparation for return to work
