Massage Therapy

About Massage Therapy

Massage therapy improves a person's health through hands-on mobilization of muscles and other soft tissues of the body. Each massage session is tailored to your specific needs. Massage can not only help you feel relaxed and ease tension, but can reduce muscle spasms and relieve other health concerns. Anyone, from infants to older adults, can benefit from massage. Martin Memorial Health and Fitness Centers offer seven types of massage therapy at our south Stuart, Palm City, Jensen Beach and St. Lucie West facilities. All of our massage therapists are licensed and certified by the State of Florida. See our massage therapy rates.

Massage Descriptions

Swedish Massage
This classic massage uses a combination of long, gliding strokes, kneading and rubbing combined with oil or lotion. This massage increases circulation, improves skin tone and soothes tired muscles.

Neck and Shoulder Massage
This is a Swedish massage that focuses on the neck, shoulders and lower back, where you carry most of your stress and tension.

Deep Tissue Massage
This specialized massage utilizes varying Swedish massage techniques, including deep pressure combined with kneading, stretching and vibration. This massage reduces muscle spasms and deep chronic pain.

Neuromuscular Therapy
This muscle-specific therapy treats deeper underlying tissue, releases entrapped nerves, relaxes soft tissue and tense or spasming muscles, and restores the body's natural flow of energy. This massage is ideal for relieving stress, tension and pain-spasm syndrome, and for restoring neurological integrity and balance.

Swe-Thai Massage
This innovative style of massage combines advanced soft-tissue therapies of Swedish massage with ancient Thai massage methods, including stretch movements, manipulations and yoga positions. Swe-Thai incorporates these eastern methods of yoga-style stretching with the fluidity of Swedish massage. Massage lasts one hour. (Offered at all locations listed below except St. Lucie West.)

Hot Stone Massage
The hot stone massage helps to loosen tight muscles, relieve stress and ease tension with the use of smooth, polished lava stones which are heated and applied to body in long flowing strokes. Grape seed oil is used to further enhance this massage, providing deep-heat therapy with a relaxing massage. Massage lasts one hour and 15 minutes. (Offered at all locations listed below except St. Lucie West.)

Detox Massage
The detox massage is a combination of relaxation massage and anti-stress muscle relief. This massage utilizes smooth, continuous, long strokes and essential oils to increase warmth in the tissues and stimulate circulation. (Essential oils include clarysage, eucalyptus, lavender, juniper and cinnamon scents in a grape seed oil base.) Massage lasts one hour. (Only offered at our Jensen Beach location.)

What to Expect During Your Massage

During your first visit, your massage therapist will ask you a few questions, including your reason for getting a massage, current physical condition, medical history, stress levels, and any specific areas of pain. Please be sure to give your therapist accurate health information, and tell him or her your expectations and needs.

During the massage, your comfort is always our first concern. Before the massage begins, you will be able to undress in private, leaving your underwear on, and will be given a sheet to drape over yourself. The massage takes place on a comfortable padded table, which is equipped with a heating pad for your comfort and relaxation during the massage. The massage therapist will only uncover the area being massaged in order to ensure your warmth and comfort. Please be sure to tell your massage therapist if you have discomfort of any kind, and if you like or dislike the pressure and sensation during the massage.
