LAP-BAND: New alternative in bariatric surgery
Each year, millions of Americans will exercise and diet in an attempt to lose weight. But for patients who are more than 100 pounds overweight, bariatric (or weight loss) surgery can be a life-saving procedure.

Martin Memorial began performing bariatric surgery in 2004 using the Roux-en Y gastric bypass procedure, considered the gold standard by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Starting this fall, Martin Memorial will also begin utilizing a new procedure called the LAP-BAND system.

Weight matters: When willpower isn't enough
When you're significantly overweight, nobody has to tell you that you'd probably be happier and healthier without the extra pounds. Willpower alone might not be enough for people who are significantly overweight. If you've honestly tried to lose weight and failed, medications or surgery could be helpful under certain conditions.

6 facts on obesity
We've all heard warnings, yet many of us keep gaining weight. Sixty-five percent of American adults are overweight or obese, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People who are obese have an abnormally high and unhealthy proportion of body fat. You may know that obesity is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, arthritis and harmful cholesterol. But scientists have six findings you may not know.

For seniors: How about losing weight today?
Much to our dismay, it is quite common for people to gain weight as they age. Some of the gain is unavoidable, because as the body ages, body fat increases as lean muscle mass and bone mass decrease. Body fat doubles over the five decades from age 25 to age 75. Body weight increases until you reach age 60, when it begins to decline.

Read on to find out how to lose weight healthfully.
