New weight-loss procedure at Martin Memorial

New weight-loss procedure at Martin Memorial

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) is now being performed at the Martin Memorial Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, in addition to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® surgeries. “Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is another effective option adding to the selection of bariatric surgeries offered at Martin Memorial,” says Dr. George Rittersbach Jr., MD, a general and vascular surgeon at Martin Memorial Health Systems. “I’m very excited to offer this surgery which can benefit many of our patients. It is proving to offer real advantages: a good weight-loss experience, fewer side effects, very little post-op intervention and the data collected over the past five years indicates very good results.”

Call (772) 223-4916 to learn more about this exciting new weight-loss procedure being performed at Martin Memorial or visit mmhs.com for more information.

Obesity

Obesity

You may know that obesity is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and harmful cholesterol. But scientists have five findings you may not know:

Finding 1: Obesity can raise some cancer risks

Finding 2: Obesity is tied to heart attacks in younger adults

Finding 3: Obesity speeds up girls' puberty

Finding 4: Obesity is a cause of diabetes in kids

Finding 5: Obesity in middle age increases risk of dementia

An adult who is overweight has a body mass index (BMI) of 25.0 to 29.9. An adult who is obese has a BMI of 30.0 or more. (To find your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Divide that answer by your height in inches. Divide that answer by your height in inches, again. The resulting number is your BMI.)

Check your BMI now.
