Volunteers Feted During National Volunteer Week
Learn how you can become a MMHS volunteer. In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 15-21), Martin Memorial celebrates the men, women and teens who volunteer their time and service throughout the health system.

Last year, 811 volunteers contributed 161,543 hours to Martin Memorial—the equivalent of 84 full-time employees. Our volunteers play a critical role in the success of our organization, providing comfort, hope and healing to all our visitors and patients.

Toyota of Stuart Supports Mother-Baby Program
Toyota of Stuart recently donated the use of a Toyota Corolla to the nurses of the mother-baby program at Martin Memorial.

The mother-baby program, established in 1988, provides universal home visitation by registered nurses to all new mothers and babies delivered at Martin Memorial Medical Center. The program is the only one of its kind in Florida and is considered a "best practice" program by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Though the program is voluntary, 98 percent of all clients accept the service.

Although a lot of seniors don't work out, they will work for a good cause.

Many Good Samaritans have found they can exercise their civic duty and their bodies at the same time, by volunteering for a cause that involves physical activity. From walking dogs for an animal shelter to delivering Meals on Wheels to coaching a youth sports team, there are a lot of ways to combine altruism with activity.

Act Now to Lower Cholesterol
Try these tips to lower your cholesterol. One way to stay heart-healthy is to keep your cholesterol level low. Cholesterol is a fatty, waxlike substance that your body uses to make hormones and build cell walls.

Cholesterol causes a problem when there is too much in the blood. This can lead to buildup on the lining of arteries. A buildup of cholesterol can cause a decrease in blood flow in the same way that buildup inside a pipe limits the flow of water. The buildup in your arteries is especially dangerous if it narrows the path to the heart and brain. To keep cholesterol low, you need to eat a nutritionally appropriate diet and exercise.

Try these tips to lower your cholesterol.
