About the Cancer Registry
Much of what can be learned about cancer can be obtained by gathering and recording information about cancer patients. The Martin Memorial Cancer Registry compiles statistical data about patients’ cancers, as well as certain benign tumors. This data is used for research, education, and continuity and improvement of patient care.
Benefits of the Registry
One of the most important aspects of ongoing cancer therapy is a systematic patient follow-up program, providing a lifetime of medical observation. These are used to check for and track evidence of recurrence, spread of the disease and treatment side effects.
How It Works
The registry collects essential research information. Data is provided to Florida Cancer Data Systems, as well as to the National Cancer Institute. Data is provided in statistical format only; no personal information is given.
Martin Memorial physicians utilize data obtained from the registry to analyze the success of various treatment programs. In addition, data is provided for use in cancer research, medical education, funding applications and medical publications. Information is also collected for staff physicians participating in the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer program initiative, which aids in the evaluation of the quality of patient care.
Martin Memorial’s Cancer Registry is operated at no cost to you. It is fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
