Medical Nutritional Therapy
Good nutrition is especially important for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Eating right can help you build your strength and withstand the effects of your cancer and its treatment. Our dietitian can help you eat healthy, feel better and stay stronger during your cancer treatment. She can help you to overcome the side effects that affect your ability to eat, including:
- Loss of appetite
- Changes in weight (loss or gain)
- Sore mouth or throat
- Dental and gum problems
- Nausea/vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Lactose intolerance
- Fatigue and/or depression
Our dietitian can help you:
- Have good information and realistic expectations and goals
- Plan meals
- Develop a grocery list with foods that help alleviate side effects such as constipation or nausea
- Evaluate vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements
- Teach you how to prevent food-borne illnesses
- Evaluate your therapeutic needs
In a one-hour private session, our registered dietitian will help you plan a healthy diet based on your individual lifestyle, medical history, and food habits and preferences. The dietitian will help to:
- Analyze your present diet and lifestyle
- Work with you to develop an individualized meal plan to meet your nutrition and lifestyle needs
- Teach you how to implement your new meal plan
- Provide you with tips for shopping, eating out and traveling
Other Nutrition Counseling Services
Martin Memorial also offers nutrition counseling for others who may benefit, including adults, adolescents, children, athletes, pregnant women and anyone who wants to achieve optimal nutrition.
Nutrition therapy is also beneficial for those with chronic diseases that affect appetite and the ability to tolerate certain foods. Good nutrition can be especially beneficial for those who have conditions such as heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, food allergies and eating disorders.

Insurance Coverage
Some insurance companies will reimburse patients for nutrition counseling services. Please contact your insurance company to find out if you have this coverage. We will provide you with a receipt to submit for reimbursement.
Medicare will reimburse for limited nutrition services, such as counseling for patients with diabetes or kidney disease. (See more information about our Diabetes Education Program.) Please ask us about the requirements for Medicare reimbursement.
